DELMAR, NY – Leroy E. Hartzel, 97, formerly of Colonie, passed away peacefully at the home of his daughter on December 7, 2010. Born in Jersey Shore, PA, he was the son of the late Harvey Russel and Bessie May Hartzel. He was a graduate of Jersey Shore High School and after settling in Albany, he worked for General Electric Company in Schenectady until his retirement in 1975. Leroy was a former deacon, elder and trustee of the First Church in Albany (Reformed), a member of Mount Vernon Masonic Lodge No. 3, F. & A.M. and a member of Tri Valley Holiday Rambler RV Club. Leroy and his wife also enjoyed their winters in Florida. When at home, he spent time in his workshop making furniture, and toys for his grandchildren. Leroy was the beloved husband of the late Sara Josephine (Jo) Hartzel. He is survived by his daughters Judith Howell and her husband Dean of Leominster, MA and Sheryl Allen and her husband Harry of Delmar. He is the grandfather of Andrea Wulffleff and her husband James, Jonathan Allen, Karyn Howell and Sara Shirback and her husband Todd. He is the great-grandfather of Ayden Shirback and Henry Wulffleff. Also surviving is his sister, Betty Homler of Lock Haven, PA and many nieces and a nephew. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, James, William, Robert, Ray and Emerson Hartzel and his sister, Eula Myer.
Funeral services will be Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (RT. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral Home. Interment will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, Delmar.
