Leslie S. Abercrombie Jr., 97, of Niskayuna, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2021.
Born in Roanoke, VA in 1924, "Les" is the son of the late Leslie S. and Mary Iris (Scanlon) Abercrombie.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers (James B.) Magruder, Jack, and Robert, and sisters Mary Iris, Leslie, (Nell) Barbara and (Margaret) Elaine; brothers-in-law Philip S. Giana and James J. Devlin, nephews Philip J. Giana and Joseph Devlin, and grandson Brian Jubrey Jr.
Les is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Madeleine (Devlin), children Mary I. (Sim Komisar), Leslie S. III (Andrea Anastas), Anne (Brian Jubrey) and Colleen (Tim Castle); grandchildren Ian Jones, Lindsay Carnevale (Drew), Kelly Jones, Leslie S. Abercrombie IV, Alexandra Abercrombie, Christina Abercrombie, John Abercrombie, Kayla Bellair-Sardos (John), Madeleine Castle and Samantha Castle; great-granddaughter Mavella Carnevale, sister-in-law Therese Giana and nephew Andrew C. Giana.
Les was a proud alumnus of the College of William & Mary (AB '48) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (MS-MGMT '70). He served in the Naval Air Corps from 1943 to 1945 where he flew Piper Cub, SNJ and Stearman biplanes, and he was privileged to participate as a WWII veteran in the Leatherstocking Honor Flight from Albany NY to Washington DC in 2019. After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, Les worked as a tax accountant for the General Electric Company in downtown Schenectady until his retirement in 1981. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Helen's Church (now St. Kateri Tekakwitha) in Niskayuna where he was the leader of Boy Scout Troop #82 for many years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and a poll worker in Niskayuna.
Visitation will be held on Thursday September 2nd from 8am-9am, with a Funeral Mass at 9am, at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish 1803 Union St, Niskayuna. The family respectfully requests that all in attendance wear a mask to protect those most vulnerable to COVID-19.
Interment to follow in the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
