Lilia C. Singer

March 22, 1923 — October 31, 2018

Lilia C. Singer passed away peacefully on October 31, 2018 with her loving family by her side. She was 95. Lilia was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the daughter of Candida and Pedro Verde. Her parents, her three siblings, and her husband Walter all preceded her in death.

She graduated from the University of Buenos Aires with a degree in Pharmacy and opened her own pharmacy. Due to the political situation in Argentina, she emigrated to San Francisco, California in 1959. She worked at various hospital and university laboratories while laboring to earn her license to practice pharmacy in the United States. She met and married Walter Singer in 1963. They moved to Albany NY where Walter became Dean of the Albany College of Pharmacy.Lilia worked in multiple local pharmacies eventually becoming the director of the pharmacy at Barnwell Nursing Home.

Lilia had many talents. She knit beautiful complicated sweaters. She sewed tailor-made clothing, often making her own patterns, a skill she learned from her mom who supported her family as a sewing supervisor in a garment shop. Lilia played the piano into her eighties, playing Fur Elise without sheet music. She was also a wonderful cook who hosted many elegant parties.

Lilia's true passion however, was painting. Remembering the enjoyment and success of sketching and painting with charcoal, pastels and India ink in high school, she began to paint in earnest after her retirement in 1983. She was a realistic painter whose favorite medium was oils. Her artwork included intricate landscapes, stills and portraits. They were displayed in galleries and shows and she won many awards. Her portraits of four former deans of the Albany College of Pharmacy are on permanent display at the college. Permanent collections also are displayed at Barnwell Nursing Home and Loudonville Assisted Living Residence.

Left missing Lilia are her devoted daughters Michelle Singer (Michael McGuinness) and Paula Singer. She also leaves behind her two grandchildren Damian(Kelli) Acevedo and Aaron (Isena) Acevedo and seven great-grandchildren (Avery, Lanie, Aiden, Asher, Gavin, Zoe and Cassius) as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins who reside in MA, NY, CA and Argentina.

The family gives many thanks to the wonderfully caring people at Loudonville Assisted Living Residence and Albany Memorial Hospital. Donations in her memory may be made to Alzheimer's Association or Alzheimer's Association of America. The family is planning a Celebration of her Life at a future date.
