VOORHEESVILLE - Lois M. (Sherman) Nopper Slusarz, age 86, formerly of Lakeland, Florida and more recently Voorheesville, NY, passed away on November 9, 2021, at Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Colonie, N.Y. from complications of Alzheimer's.
Lois was born Christmas Day 1934 to the late Clara Belle Harris and Leslie Charles Sherman in Albany, N.Y. She recovered from childhood Polio at the age of seven. Lois attended Albany Public Schools, graduating from Albany High School in 1953. She also married Joseph Robert "Bob" Nopper in 1953 with whom she bore five children: Brian, Bruce, Susan, Barry and Sharon. With the loving help of Bob's maternal grandfather, Oscar J. Miller, Lois raised her five children after Bob's passing on Valentine's Day in 1964.
In May 1972, Lois married Thomas Richard Slusarz, a dental technician, in Albany, N.Y. Lois lovingly welcomed the addition of Tom's three children: Donna, Thomas D. and Brian Slusarz. Her husband accepted a management position requiring relocation to Holyoke, MA. They relocated to Winter Haven, Florida and settled in Lakeland, Florida after Tom's retirement. Thomas Slusarz, a WWII veteran injured at the Battle of the Bulge, passed away from complications of Alzheimer's in June 2012 at the age of 87.
Lois remained in her home for several months with the help of her son, Bruce Nopper and his fiancé Michelle Womble. She also lived for several months with her son, Barry and his wife, Rita Nopper, in Kissimmee, Fl. In November 2020 she relocated to Voorheesville, N.Y. with her son Brian Nopper and his family.
Lois is survived by her children Brian Nopper/ (Wayne Shatraw); Bruce (Michelle)Nopper (FL); Barry Nopper (Rita); Sharon Buttorff and Step- children Donna Slusarz (WA) and Brian Slusarz (NY). In addition, she is survived by her grandchildren: Christopher (Danielle) Nopper (LA); Bobbi Jean (Bob) Brouillette (CT); Leslie Campbell (MA); Luke (Samantha) Campbell (MA); Kasey Nopper (FL); Kassianne (Caleb) Oliver (FL); Rolando (Amanda) Gorbea (FL); Damaris (Jason) Nieznajko (MA); Yanira (Daniel) Tein (IL); Stephen Lampone (FL); Stacey (Ronald) Rogers (MO); Lily Nopper-Shatraw (NY) and Matthew Nopper-Shatraw (NY); Joshua Hill (WA). She also has eight great-grand-children and six 2nd great-grand-children. Lois is also survived by her first cousin, J. Richard (Nuala) McCarthy (NY).
In addition to her husbands, Lois is predeceased by her daughter Susan Nopper (MA) and stepson, Thomas D. Sluzarz (FL). All her siblings, including sisters: Clare Wilson, Jean Thomas; Gail McMillen; Dianne Elmendorf and brothers: Leslie Charles Sherman, Jr. and David Sherman predeceased her. Lois is also predeceased by her step-grandson Adam Slusarz (NY).
Visitation will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Rd, Colonie, NY on Monday, November 15th between 5 – 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday November 16th at St. Matthew's Church on Mountain View Street in Voorheesville, NY at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Colonie.
