COLONIE – Loreto "Lou" Gabriel, 83, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, April 23, 2009 surrounded by his loving family.
Lou was born on March 18, 1926 in Colonie and was the son of the late Louis and Antoinette (Pape) Gabriel. He served in the US Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany from 1953 to 1954 and attaining the rank of private in the Signal Corp. He was involved with the family business - Gabriel's Food Center in Schenectady and he was also self-employed in commercial and residential construction until the fall of 2008.
Lou was a 57 year member of the Albany Elks Lodge No. 49, a member of the American Legion Post 1019 and a communicant of St. Clare's Church. He enjoyed hunting and playing with his grandsons and spending time with his family.
Lou is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Peggy A. (Morrison) Gabriel; his devoted daughter and son-in-law, Marci and Brian Hickey; his cherished grandsons, Alan, Connor and John Hickey; his brothers, Nunzio "John" Gabriel (Rita), Louis "Junior" Gabriel (Margie) and Vito Gabriel (Carolyn); his sister-in-law, Nancy Gabriel and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Mario Gabriel.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Community Hospice of Albany; Dr. Doyle and his staff at NYOH, Dr. Giuliano and Dr. McCormack for the compassionate care given to Lou. They would also like to thank their many family and friends for their loving support during this time.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Monday at St. Clare's Church, 1947 Central Ave., Colonie. Interment will follow at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville. Calling hours will be held at New Comer-Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.) on Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.
