LTC Todd J. Clark, Cavalry, US Army, 40, was killed Saturday June 8, 2013 in Afghanistan.
Born in Albany, son of Raymond J. "Jack," COL(Retired), US Army and Kathleen Murphy Clark, brother of Kyle E. Clark. Todd is the husband of Shelley Wuenstel Clark and devoted father of Collin Thomas and Madison Elaine Clark, his greatest accomplishments in life. Also surviving are his in-laws, Paul Wuenstel and Susan Chancellor; grandmother, Helen Wuenstel.
A 1990 Christian Brothers Academy graduate; a graduate of Texas A&M University (BS), Naval Postgraduate School (Master's Degree); Command and General Staff College (Master's Degree). LTC Clark was commissioned as an Armor/Cavalry Officer in 1995, following his graduation from the Corps of Cadets, "Boozin' B-2" Unit. He served in Kuwait and Bosnia with the 1st Cavalry Division and as troop commander, led Lightning Troop, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in the attack on Iraq, for his first combat tour. He was an Advisor to the Iraqi Special Police Commandoes, his second combat tour. Todd then served with the 10th Division (Mountain) Staff in Iraq, his third tour; he was the S3 with one of the 10th Division (Mountain) Cavalry Squadrons in Afghanistan, his fourth combat tour. It was during this tour that he sustained IED injuries and spent 8 months recuperating at Walter Reed Military Hospital, receiving his first Purple Heart. Todd then served as an XO with another of the 10th Division (Mountain) Cavalry Squadrons at Fort Drum, and as Senior Advisor to the Afghan National Army for his fifth and last combat tour.
His awards are as follows: Bronze Star Medal, 4, Posthumous; Purple Heart, 2, Posthumous; Meritorious Service Medal, 3, Posthumous; Army Commendation w/combat distinguishing device "V"; Army Commendation Medal, 4; Army Achievement Medal, 3; Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal; National Defense Service Medal w/Bronze Service Star; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Kosovo Campaign Medal With Bronze Service Star; Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/Bronze Service Star, 2; Iraq Campaign Medal w/Bronze Service Star, 4; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Korean Defense Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon, 3; NATO Medal Kosovo; NATO Medal; Combat Action Badge; Parachutist Badge, Basic; Presidential Unit Citation (Army & Air Force), 2; Joint Meritorious Unit Award; Meritorious Unit Commendation (Army); Overseas Service Bar, 5.
Survived by uncles and aunts: Edward V. and Jeanne Owens Casserly, Richard P. and Carolyn Clark of England, Godmother Debra Casserly Warton of California. He is predeceased by his Grandparents: Raymond G. and Gloria M. Sabey Clark, and John T. and Margaret Owens Murphy; Uncle and Godfather Gary E. Clark. Additionally, he is survived by many treasured nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family within the AOH and military communities.
There will be a Motorcade from Albany Airport to CBA upon Todd's arrival on Monday, June 17, 2013 coordinated by the Patriot Guard. Calling hours will be from 3:00pm to 8:00pm on June 17, 2013 at Christian Brothers Academy, Airline Drive, Colonie, NY. Funeral services with full Military honors will be on June 18, 2013 at 1:30 pm at St. Madeline Sophie Church, Carman Rd. Guilderland where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. A Gathering Memorial Reception will take place at the Hibernian Hall, 375 Ontario Street, Albany, NY immediately following the Funeral Service. Services will take place on Thursday and Friday in San Antonio, Texas at the Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin HWY, San Antonio, TX 78218, (210-828-2811). Interment will be in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions are requested to the Clark Children Education Trust Fund, c/o New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Albany, NY 12205. Similar contribution arrangements are planned for the Texas iteration.
