NISKAYUNA – Luis Azoia, 87, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2024 at his home with his family by his side.
He was born in Lisbon, Portugal on June 7, 1936 a son of the late Manuel and Maria (Casemiro) Azoia. He came to the United States in 1966 and worked for Bellevue Dairy in Schenectady. In the following years, Luis managed several dairies in the tri-city area.
In 1985 he opened Luis Deli in Troy which he operated successfully until he decided to retire in 2002. Luis kept active in his retirement years volunteering at Schenectady High School, Ellis Hospital and even providing translation assistance thru the district courts.
He was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather and he will be deeply missed.
He was predeceased by his stepmother Rose Frescatore Azoia and several brothers and sisters.
Luis is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maria; his children, Jose (Lori) Azoia and Jaqueline (Richard) Gessner; his sisters Ione Ferreira and Lucille Meyers; his grandchildren Megan Rodriguez, Victoria Poteralski, Samantha Azoia, Joshua Poteralski and Michael Azoia; his great grandchildren, Jaida, Aiden, Anna Maria, Alexander, Jordyn, Izzy and Daniel. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2024 from 5:00 pm
to 7:00 pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Friday, March 22, 2024 at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 2777 Albany Street, Schenectady. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens.
