Colonie- Magdalene Davis, 72, died on Sunday, April 22, 2007 at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital, after an illness due to complications from diabetes. She was the daughter of the late Rudolph I. and Verniece B. Kennedy. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, she studied piano at Capital University Conservatory of Music, Columbus, Ohio. In 1952 she married Charles Davis and moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she began her life-long dedication to home, family, and community. In Cleveland she participated in numerous civic and human rights organizations. Her 10-year involvement in the Civil rights Movement helped bring about changes in housing and education. She was for many years an active member of the Cleveland League of Women Voters and for several years a volunteer in programs for the Educable Mentally Challenged.
She moved with her husband to Albany in 1974 where she continued her commitment to volunteer service. She was a member of the now defunct Colvin Avenue YWCA, helping to create the YW Womanswork Art Gallery. She was a member of the Designers' Craft Council of the Schenectady Museum. She exhibited fibre designs at the Schenectady Museum and Womanswork gallery. Magdalene was for many years a member of Re-Evaluation Counseling, a peer counseling group. Her last and most rewarding service were visits to Child's Nursing Home. Magdalene also attended Grace Fellowship Church.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Charles; two sons, Charles Michael of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Jon Mark of New York City; four grandchildren, Jahelijah J. of Albany, Aaron Michael, Jarrett Matthew of Port Moody, British Columbia and Ujijji Dasisi of Brooklyn; one great-granddaughter, Kerrington Vanburen; her sister Helen Shew of Bethesda, MD, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Joseph and Mildred Davis of Shaker Heights, OH, nephew Joseph Isa Nazeer Davis of Cleveland, OH, beloved cousins, other family members and many dear friends.
A memorial service will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at Grace Fellowship Church, 20 Delatour Rd, Watervliet, NY 12189. The family has requested that no flowers be sent. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hortense & Louis Rubin Dialysis Center, Inc., 21 Crossing Blvd., Clifton Park, NY 12065, or the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd, Loudonville, NY 12211, or the Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205, in memory of Magdalene Davis.
