Margaret A. Smith "Peg", 88, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct 24, 2012 at Teresian House with her family by her side. She was born and raised in Schenectady to the late Joseph and Marie Fischer, and was a lifelong resident of Schenectady and South Colonie. Peg, went to work for the NY Telephone Company as a young woman, met the dashing Jack Smith, married and began her family life. In addition to bearing six children she kept herself busy through the Ladies' auxiliary of St. Clare's Parish.
After her husband died in '74 she began the widow's group and worked at the jail ministry for the church; she served as a Eucharistic minister and brought the Eucharist to the home bound for years. She worked as a home health aide of Northeastern, NY and upon retirement became the face for the Carmelite Monastery in Schenectady, opening the doors to the public and manning the gift shop, welcoming guests as a member of the Carmelite's 3rd order. In addition to her parents and her husband, Peg was predeceased by her 3 siblings.
Peg is survived by 6 children, Kathleen Burke of Troy, Barbara Burke of Lacey, WA, Patricia Vassi of Latham, James Smith of Clifton Park, William Smith of Arlington, MA and Theresa Lennon of Niskayuna, 19 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at the Teresian House for all of the care and compassion given to Peg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Northeastern New York Pine West Plaza Building 4, suite 405 Washington Ave. Ext. Albany, NY 12205 in Peg's memory.
Funeral service for Peg will be Monday, Oct 29, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Teresian House, Infant of Prague Chapel, 200 Washington Ave. Ext. Albany. A calling hour will precede the service at the Teresian House. Burial will follow in the Mass at Most Holy Redeemer. Calling hours will be Sunday, Oct 28, 2012 from 4 to 7 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie.
