GHENT- Margaret Veronica Kurkela, 83, of Ghent, passed away on May 10, 2006 at The Columbia Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.
She was born January 20, 1923 in Albany and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Ann Kenny Caccamo. Margaret graduated from Albany High School and was employed with New York State Department of Education, John G. Myers Department Store and John G. Myers Travel Agency. During a travel agent trip to Switzerland in 1973 she met Walter E. Kurkela Jr whom she married in June 1974. Together they owned and managed the Duso World Travel Agency in Poughkeepsie NY until it's sale in 1989. In 1985, they built a retirement home in Ghent, NY , where she was a communicant of the Church of St. James, Chatham. Margaret enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling and family occasions. She was an ardent New York Yankee Baseball and Duke Basketball fan.
In addition to her late parents, Margaret was predeceased by her sister Theresa and her husband Fortune Audino, her brother in law Herbert Rosenberg and her beloved niece, Mary Pagano.
She is the beloved wife of Walter E. Kurkela Jr., She is survived by her five sons, Craig of Red Hook, NY., Walter (Tricia) of Monmouth Junction, NJ, Scott (Mary) of West Islip, NY, James (Judy) of Poughquag, NY and Robert (Lisa Rosenfeld) of New City, NY; thirteen beloved grandchildren; Brandon, Kyle, Erin, Tyler, Courtney, Matthew, Ryan, Brett, Lindsay, Julie, Michelle, Cassidy and Rachel. She is cherished sister of Vincent (Pat) Caccamo or Bradenton, FL and Mary Rosenberg of Colonie. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Sunday from 5 to 8 pm at NewComer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Funeral services will be Monday at 8:30 at the funeral home and at 9:30 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Delmar where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Our Lady, Help of Christians Cemetery, Glenmont.
