LATHAM - Margaretha “Margaret” Elise Amelia Hilhorst-Knauf, 90, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, December 16, 2024.
Margaret was born in Wassenaar, Netherlands on May 15th, 1934. She grew up during World War II and survived Nazi occupation. She met her husband Harry Martin Knauf, who served in the U.S. Army stationed in Europe, and later immigrated to the U.S. when she was 26 years old. Margaret was a cosmetologist and homemaker who was delighted in caring for her family. She had many skills most especially baking and embroidery. She enjoyed family camping trips and summers at Lake George. Margaret had a deep love for the ocean, stemming from her childhood swimming in the cold waters of the North Sea. Margaret and her husband, married 60 years, were long time members of Loudonville Christian Community Church and supported many charities including serving at the Capital City Rescue Mission.
Margaret is survived by her four children, Steve Knauf (Carrie White), Mark Knauf, Linda Knauf (Richard Calkins), Carla Knauf and her four grandchildren, Amanda Collet, Melissa Knauf, Casey Olivia, and Hannah Knauf. Margaret is predeceased by her husband, Harry and her brother Loek Hilhorst.
A committal service will be held at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY on Friday, December 20, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. Please arrive 15 minutes prior and gather at the visitor's center.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Capital City Mission of Albany.
