SCHENECTADY - Marie McCann Budge, 92, died on Monday, January 23, 2012 in Albany surrounded by family members.
Born on February 9, 1919, she was the oldest daughter of James and Catherine Florence O'Meara McCann. She was raised on the family farm in Chateaugay, NY, where her parents emphasized the importance of education to her and her six siblings. She left the farm to attend Plattsburgh State Teachers' College, where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1939. She taught in a rural, one room schoolhouse in the Adirondacks before moving to Schenectady, where she met Percy George Budge. They were married from January 23, 1946 until his death on April 2, 1978.
She was a dedicated teacher, who retired in 1978 from the South Colonie School District. Following that, she was employed at the gift shop of the Albany Airport. Then, she worked until age 89 as an independent contractor and product demonstrator for such companies as WalMart.
Called "G-Ma" by her grandchildren, Marie McCann Budge admitted to being a feisty, independent woman. She also is remembered as a good wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend. She was an avid golfer who traveled to Scotland and spent many summer days on the links of Schenectady Municipal Golf Course and Stanford Golf Course.
Marie McCann Budge is survived by her son, Edward William Budge of Schenectady; her daughter, Mary Ellen Walsh of Niskayuna; her beloved grandchildren, Jason Percy Walsh of Saratoga, Jeffrey James Walsh of Niskayuna and Jennifer Marie Walsh of Saratoga; her brothers, Henry (Marie) McCann of New Hartford and Hugh (Lucille) McCann of Malone; her sister-in-law, Eileen McCann and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, John and Daniel McCann; her sisters, Catherine (William) Young and Florence (Jerry) Rosman and her son-in-law, Jimmy Walsh.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ the King Church in Westmere (Albany). A calling hour will precede the Mass from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Interment is at Memory Gardens in Colonie.
