COLONIE – Marilyn L. Keefrider, 82, passed peacefully into eternal life on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at the Inn of Community Hospice after a brief illness with her family by her side. Born in Schenectady, she was the daughter of the late William and Doris Boyce Mapes.
Marilyn had a very modest upbringing and started working full time when she was 16 years old. A hard worker, she was hired by General Electric and subsequently for New York State. Once she had children she became a stay-at-home mom. It was her career, and she was "The Best!" Marilyn was an awesome cook and going to her home for dinner was akin to eating at a five-star restaurant, but with more generous portions. She was always up for a great meal or get-together. Being around family brought a beautiful smile to Marilyn's face. She truly was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and sister.
Those who knew Marilyn well, called her feisty, independent, and unafraid of being different. She loved to explore, was a voracious reader, and a master of Variety Crossword puzzles. Her favorite colors were red and purple. Marilyn's faith was deep and she loved to go to Mass at the Teresian House, where she greatly appreciated receiving the Eucharist.
Marilyn was predeceased in 2008 by her beloved husband Richard (Spike) Keefrider, and her brother Billy Mapes.
She is survived by her sons, Michael (Lois) and Dennis Keefrider; her grandchildren; Michael and Kristin Keefrider, whom she lovingly referred to as her "Chinaman" and "Chinawoman." Marilyn is also survived by her brothers Richard and Philip Mapes.
Her newest family members were the Teresian House Staff. They loved her like a mom and there is no way the Keefrider family could adequately convey how dear they are to them. Marilyn received exceptional care and was appreciated there as a unique person.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11:00 AM at the Infant of Prague Chapel at the Teresian House. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. Entombment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
In celebration of Valentine's Day and at Marilyn's request, please send flowers to those who are blessed by your love. Memorial contributions may be made to Teresian House, 200 Washington Ave., Ext., Albany, NY 12208 in memory of Marilyn L. Keefrider.
