CHARLESTON, SC-Mark D. Smith, 40, of Charleston, passed away unexpectedly on July 14, 2016 at his home.
Mark attended Holy Cross Elementary School and Albany High School. He graduated from State University of New York at Albany earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology.
He was a kind gentleman who had a contagious smile and a quick wit. He was fond of creating humorous nicknames for his family members. His mother would in turn affectionately call him "Markaroni". He had a special bond with our dog Babe, whom he nicknamed "Lady Jane."
He fought a courageous battle overcoming many obstacles. Mark possessed a keen intellect and analytical mind. He was a natural athlete who excelled in a variety of sports. He was a valued team member of basketball, softball and golf leagues. He was the "go-to-guy" for shooting three-pointers in basketball.
Mark was a superb sales person who won numerous awards for the highest sales in New York State while working for Verizon and various other companies.
He recently moved to Charleston, S.C. to begin a new life. He loved living by the ocean especially going to Folly Beach. He enjoyed the company of many new friends and often spoke of them as being warm, kind and fun to be with.
Mark is survived by his loving parents, Ann and Stephen Smith of Colonie, N.Y.; his sister, Karen Smith (Gregory Messier and Logan); his nephew, Jovani; brother, Gregory (Diana) Smith of Schenectady, N.Y.; step-sister, Kelly Vargas and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He is predeceased by his by his maternal grandparents, Arthur and Genevieve Silvano; paternal grandparents, Mary, Kathleen Mulderry and Dennis Smith and his uncle, Gregory J. Smith.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 10am at St. Pius X Church, Loudonville. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2016 from 4-7pm at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY. Interment will be held at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
Mark's family extends their deep appreciation to the members of the Charleston EMS and Police Dept. and especially to Kelly Kraus.
