We are saddened to announce the passing of Mark E. Darby, 68, on January 31, 2025. Mark was not only loved by his family, but also a beloved friend, colleague, and an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born July 3, 1956 in Rochester, Pennsylvania, Mark grew up with kindness and an unwavering optimism that would define his entire life. He developed a love for tennis at a young age which continued throughout his life resulting in an outstanding career in professional tennis. While in high school he was a Pennsylvania state champion and accomplished one of the best singles record in school history. This success followed him while playing college tennis at Penn State where he qualified for the 1978 NCAA Championships. He went on to play professional tennis and was in the Top 500 of the ATP rankings.
Mark’s officiating career began as a supervisor with the USTA and assistant referee at the US Open. He continued as ATP Tour supervisor from 1990 to 2017. Among his accomplishments was being inducted in the USTA Middle States Hall of Fame.
Mark demonstrated an extraordinary ability to see the good in every situation, always lifting the spirits of those around him. No matter what the circumstance, he could be counted on to bring a smile, offer a word of encouragement, or provide a comforting presence. Even in the face of challenges, Mark maintained a hopeful outlook and a strength to persevere. He deeply loved Linda and their triplets and always left them with a smile, hug and expressions of love. He was a remarkable person who will be missed by family and friends throughout the world.
He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Jane Darby, and his beloved uncle, John Beaty.
He is survived by Linda Cardona and their children, Caroline, Ryan and Connor; brother, John (Lucinda); sisters, Susan (Robert Anderson) and Mary (Giuli Bratton); as well as nieces and nephews who enjoyed a special relationship with him.
The family would like to thank the many dedicated physicians and healthcare personnel that showed their kindness to Mark during his illness. Sincere thanks to Dr. Mihir Raval and Tahara Offord from NYOH, Dr Thomas Schumacher and Erin Nuzzi from Fresenius Kidney Care Niskayuna.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ambrose Church, Latham, NY. Friends and family may call prior to the service at 9:30 a.m.
Donations can be made in Mark’s memory to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation or the American Kidney Fund.
