Mark Chandler Matthews, age 67, passed away suddenly on February 13, 2023 in Albany, New York. Born at Harlem Hospital on September 4, 1955, he was the first son of the late Adelade Matthews and the eldest of six siblings.
He is preceded in death by his mother, sister Deborah Matthews, grandmother Wilmont Chandler-Greenidge, and grandfather Cyril Greenidge.
Mark grew up in The Bronx, and spent several years living with his grandmother in their native Barbados. He was a graduate of Evander Childs High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree at The State University of New York at Oneonta in 1979. He moved to Albany in 1980 to work for the New York State Department of Civil Service.
Later, he worked tirelessly for 33 years for the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, retiring in 2013 as the Deputy Superintendent for Administration at Coxsackie Correctional Facility in Coxsackie, New York.
In his spare time, Mark loved watching anime, football, riding his bike, working out at the gym, sport shooting, and fishing. Most of all, he will be remembered as a devoted father and a committed brother and friend.
Mark leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved daughter Danyel Matthews, sisters Karyn Matthews, Joyce Matthews, Alicia Matthews, and Paula (Bobby) Matthews-Hoffman, brother Ronald Matthews, and many other family members, friends, and co-workers, who will miss him very much.
Together with his family and loved ones, Mark's community is invited to honor his life on March 4, 2023 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, in Colonie, New York. The viewing will begin at 12:00PM, and the service will follow at 2:00PM. Services will be streamed.
