Mark S. Miller

August 21, 1946 — August 9, 2023

Mark Scott Miller, 76, passed away on August 9, 2023, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY.

Born in Columbus, OH to Scott Allen and Mary Louise Miller, he attended Grandview Heights High School where he was on the varsity football, track, and wrestling teams, played trombone in the concert, marching, and musical pit bands, and relished competing in chess club. He attended Ohio State University where he studied psychology. Inspired by his father's WWII service in the Army Air Corps, Mark enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served honorably from 1966–1971. He worked as a weapons control system mechanic while stationed in Vietnam, Thailand, and the U.S. After his service, he began a long career in cable television, which brought him to Wichita Falls, TX and Milwaukee, WI, eventually becoming Vice President of Engineering at Time Warner Cable in Albany, NY.

Living in Guilderland, NY since 1983, Mark loved to grill for his family and play with his dogs Krumpet, Tennyson, Jojo, and Zoey, who helped him remember Dusty, his beloved childhood boxer. When he wasn't with his family or maintaining his perfect lawn, Mark was most likely golfing at Pinehaven Country Club or Orchard Creek. An avid sports fan, he was dedicated to the Ohio State Buckeyes football and basketball teams. While growing up, Mark listened to Saint Louis Cardinals baseball on his handheld radio and has been a diehard fan ever since. He shared his love of sports by coaching and assisting his sons' sports leagues and enjoyed volunteering with the Special Olympics before his lengthy illness.

When he wasn't watching sports on television, he was likely enjoying old westerns (especially John Wayne). His fondness for history led him to paint Civil War miniatures and build highly detailed model ships. Mark could often be heard boasting about his sons' accomplishments. He saw himself in Matthew's technical engineering skills, Michael's distinguished 20-year career in the Air Force, and Scott's perseverance in pursuing a PhD in music.

He is survived by Lauri, his wife of 52 years (married on July 31, 1971); his three sons: Matthew (Tracy) of Montclair, NJ, Michael (Terri) of Lexington, NC, and Scott (Amanda) of Brooklyn, NY; his grandchildren: AJ (19), Madeline (13), Aspen (9), and Malcolm (7); his sister Lisa (Tom) Herron of Waldo, OH; his brother-in-law James (Joyce) Campbell of North Royalton, OH; and his many caring nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his spoiled boxer Zoey.

The family wishes to thank all the nurses and doctors who provided Mark with excellent care, especially those in Ellis Hospital's ER and ICU.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 19th at 2:00 pm at Lynnwood Reformed Church, 3714 Carmen Rd, Schenectady, NY 12303, in Guilderland. Mark will be laid to rest at Saratoga National Cemetery on August 21st—his 77th birthday—at 12:00 pm.
