Mary A. Bechtoldt

January 21, 1927 — September 24, 2012

NISKAYUNA – Mary A. Bechtoldt passed away peacefully with her family by her side on September 24, 2012 at Ellis Hospital, after a short illness. Born to Nicholas and Irene Slish on January 21, 1927 in Forest City, PA, Mary moved to Watervliet as a girl and graduated from Catholic Central High School in Troy in 1944. Mary is survived by her husband of 64 years, Charles W. Bechtoldt whom she married on January 25, 1948. She lived the majority of her adult life in Niskayuna where she and Chuck raised their family.


A warm and caring mother and grandmother, Mary is survived by two sons, Paul Bechtoldt and his wife, Denise of Peckville, PA and Matthew Bechtoldt of Niskayuna; a daughter, Marcy Bellows and her husband, Michael of Ballston Spa; two granddaughters, Heidi Baldacci and her husband, Thomas of Lancaster, PA and Holly Bechtoldt of Ardmore, PA; and two grandsons, Charles and William Bellows of Ballston Spa. In addition, Mary is survived by two brothers, Joseph Slish and his wife, Connie of Latham, Nicholas Slish and his wife, Sonya of Clifton Park; a sister, Ruth Ann Metzinger of Tyler, TX and a sister-in-law, Barbara Bartley of Catskill, as well as several nieces and nephews.


While raising her family, Mary worked at Birchwood Elementary School in Niskayuna and in later years for the Division Offices of Friendly Restaurants in Albany from where she retired in 1990. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Ellis Hospital ICU for their care, support and compassion during Mary's illness.


At Mary's request there will be no calling hours. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Niskayuna Volunteer Fire Company District Two, 2772 Troy Schenectady Rd., Niskayuna, NY 12309 in memory of Mary A. Bechtoldt.
