COLONIE – Mary Alice Hughes, 90, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Guilderland Center Nursing Home. She was a former longtime resident of Colonie and currently resided at the Atria Shaker Assisted Living in Albany for the past three years.
Mary Alice was born on April 1, 1921 in Troy and was the daughter of the late William J. and Mary (Nally) Hughes. She was the salutatorian of the Class of 1940 at St. Ann's High School in Albany and was a scholarship recipient of St. Rose College. She was a senior tax account clerk for the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance for 45 years before retiring in April of 1986. She attended senior citizen functions at Our Lady of Mercy Church.
Mary Alice is survived by her brother-in-law, Vincent E. Pierce of Colonie; her nieces, Kathleen (Frank) Gillick and Ellen (Dan) Dennis both of Rotterdam, Patty Pierce of Colonie, and Mary (Bob) Schneider of Clifton Park; her nephew, Dr. Vincent E. Pierce Jr. of Cherry Hill, NJ; her grandnieces, Dr. Kathleen (Corey) Vest, Cassie Pierce, Dr. Suzanne Schneider, Rebecca Pierce, Amy Schneider, and Laura Pierce; her grandnephews, Dan (Laurie) Dennis Jr., Dr. John, Vincent, and Thomas Gillick; and her great grandnephews, Kyle and Connor Vest. She was predeceased by her sister, Marge Hughes Pierce and her niece-in-law, Karen Pierce.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Christ Our Light Catholic Church, 1 Maria Drive, Loudonville. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Colonie. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Christ Our Light Catholic Church.
