Mary C. Martin

May 27, 1917 — December 8, 2013

ALBANY – Mary C. Martin, 96, formerly of New Scotland Avenue, died peacefully on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at the Teresian House, where she has resided since 2010.

Born in Hudson, NY on May 27, 1917 to the late Michael and Alice Chicquin, Mary received her early education in schools in the Chatham and Hudson area, and graduated high school from the Cathedral Academy in Albany in 1935. In 1936 Mary graduated from the Mildred Elley Business School to begin a 12 year career as a legal secretary for Brady & Brady on State St. in Albany. In 1949 she married William E. Martin, and went to work for New York State in the Division of Audit and Control in the Alfred E. Smith Building. Upon the birth of her son in 1956, Mary became a full-time homemaker until she rejoined the work force in 1968. Mary retired from the Albany County Department of Social Services in 1980 having achieved the position of the Assistant to the Director of Food Stamps.

Mary was predeceased by her husband of over 35 years, William E. Martin in April of 1987; her brother, Alex Fuller; her sister, Anna Fahey; her half-brother, Paul Carpentier, and infant daughter, Mary Alice.

Having been orphaned by the age of five, and suffering the premature loss of most of her family and friends, Mary gratefully cherished the friendship and kindness extended to her by her son's friends through the years.

Mary is survived by her son, Robert Martin of Albany and the following cherished friends of the family, Susan and William Barber and their son Karl; Bill Johnson and Joy Pullmain; Joyce Novak; Tina and Carl Walker, and the late Christine Kelly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Infant of Prague Chapel at the Teresian House, 200 Washington Ave. Ext., Albany.

Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205 in memory of Mary.
