Mary Virginia (Decker) DeRensis passed away peacefully on July 6, 2017, at Mary's Haven, Saratoga Springs.
Born April 10, 1922, daughter of Arthur and Beulah Decker and raised in Bovina Center, NY, a small upstate town that was as she said, "a place where we were never bored", and full of family and friends. After graduation Mary was a real life "Rosie The Riveter" during WWII working at Bendix Aviation making airplane parts for the war effort. She met the love of her life, Victor DeRensis and married in 1947. They set up their first home in Sidney, NY while he pursued a teaching degree then moved to Schenectady for his first position.
After raising a family, Mary rejoined the workforce at Schenectady County Department of Social Services as a senior examiner. She learned a lot about the profession and gained lots of friends that she kept long after she retired in 1984. She and Vic enjoyed retirement together until he passed away in 1987.
An artistic soul with a love of birds and plants and a passion for reading and crossword puzzles, she continued to gain friends at her cherished book club well into her 90s. Her last year and a half were spent with a whole new set of friends and the wonderful staff at Ingersoll Place. She enjoyed the activities offered, especially bingo, and continued to seek new friends and experiences.
She will be deeply missed by son Michael and wife Eileen of Cohoes and beloved granddaughter Jaime of Nashville, TN, and son Thomas and husband John Davis of Scituate, MA. She was predeceased by her husband, and her brother Francis Decker. She was also the "adopted" Grandma D to many in her daughter-in-law's family.
The family wishes to express very special thanks to the staff at Ingersoll Place, especially Cookie, and the caring and dedicated team and volunteers at Mary's Haven and Hospice.
Calling hours will be held at New Comer Funerals & Cremations, 343 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205, on Saturday, July 15, 2017 from 11:00am to noon with a service to immediately follow. Burial will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park 2150 Central Ave, Schenectady, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Mary's Haven, 35 New St. Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
