Loudonville- Mary E. Elmselig, 91, passed away peacefully at her residence on October 4, 2014. Mary was born October 16, 1922 in Wooster, Ohio and was the daughter of the late Weston and Isabelle Peckinpaugh. She married Edward Joseph Abele (1982) on January 2, 1947 in San Diego, California. She later remarried Paulus Elmselig, a longtime family friend in February of 1988. Paulus passed in November of 2011.
She was a graduate of the Ohio State University and was for many years a Child Welfare Caseworker with the Albany County Social Services specializing in the placement of children in foster homes and with adoptive parents.
She was a charter member of the Loudonville Presbyterian Church and in later years joined the New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Albany. She served as a Deacon and was co-chairman of the Meals on Wheels delivery program operated by the church and sponsored by St. Peter's Hospital, serving many years. In 2005 she returned to the Loudonville church and renewed friendships with the members of long ago.
Mrs. Elmselig was a member of both the German-American Club of Albany and Germania Hall of Troy, NY. Through her husband Paulus she made many acquaintances in the Roundtop Village in the Catskill Mountains.
Mary loved camping with the family at Fish Creek Campsite in the Adirondacks and on Cape Cod at Nickerson State Campground.
She Enjoyed the companionship of her cocker spaniel Fawn for almost 17 years.
Mary is survived by her son Larry Abele and his wife Gay of Loudonville and her son Paul Abele of Lancaster, MA. Mary also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Lauren Abele of San Francisco, California, Colin Abele of Rensellaerville, New York, Grace Abele and her husband Garrett Weeda of Gainsville, Florida, Dennis Abele and his wife Deanna Ashkeboussi and great-grandson Oliver if Schenectady, New York. Mary is predeceased by her twin brother Bradley and other brother Alfred Peckinpaugh.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to all the Hospice members that cared for Mary since February. Their skill and compassion made mom's last days as comfortable as could be.
Calling hours will be on Friday October 10, 2014 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, with a short service to follow at 7:00pm. Interment of ashes will be private and at the convenience of the family.
