Mary Kathryn (Kay) McCann, Aged 84, died peacefully at her daughter's home in Stillwater on November 30, 2014 where she was loved and cared for this past year.
Born on September 10, 1930 in Oneonta, she was one of three children of the late Rev. Philip and Daisy (Sweet) Luther. Her family lived in Oneonta and Herkimer before moving to Albany in 1937, where her father was appointed pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church.
Kay graduated from Albany High School in 1948 and then attended Albany Business College. She spent the majority of her career working for the NYS Health Department, retiring in 1993.
Music was very important in her life. She sang in several local choral groups and was soloist at two area churches: The First Church in Albany and the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Menands. She also was the soloist at Congregation Berith Sholom in Troy.
Her church was also very important to her. Through the years, she served as Deacon, Elder, and Trustee at The First Church in Albany where she was also Elder delegate to Classis, Clerk of Consistory, secretary to the board of trustees for the Capital area Council of Churches, and a member of Church Women United. After retirement, she did volunteer work, but the majority of her time was spent doting on her beloved daughter and two cherished grandsons, to whom she was fortunate to have had a very large part in their upbringing.
Survivors include her daughter Nancy "Betsy" Messercola of Stillwater; grandsons Gene and Gabriel Messercola of Stillwater; six nieces and nephews; Jack and Philip Luther, Susan (Luther) Smith, Carl Wiedemann, Martha Youngblood, and Ellen Kawano.
The family would like to thank "our earth Angel", Sue Kussius and her husband Keith for their friendship, exceptional care and compassion throughout this past year. Thanks also to Rev. Aline Russell, Rev. John Paarlberg, Rev. Susan Vincent Cox, and the dedicated staff at Rensselaer Community Hospice for their care and comforting help.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 11:00am at the First Church in Albany, 110 N. Pearl St. Albany, NY 12207. Calling hours will precede the service from 9:00 to 11:00 at the church. Interment will follow the service in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Colonie.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the First Church of Albany, or to the Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144.
