COLONIE - Mary Louise Murphy, 93, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011.
Born on October 5, 1918 in New Castle, PA, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Adelaide Murphy and, for over 60 years, the beloved wife of John D. Murphy who predeceased her in 2002.
She graduated from the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Clinton, Iowa as an RN in 1940. When asked why she went all the way to Iowa for school, she would respond quickly by saying "to meet my husband". The family lived in Des Moines, Iowa until moving to Colonie in 1959. After her children were grown, she worked as the evening supervisor at the Brady Maternity Hospital in Albany until its closure. She then worked for a number of years as a teacher and mentor for young mothers at St. Catherine's before retiring.
She was a communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church (now Christ Our Light Catholic Church) for many years and attended Mass frequently at the St. Francis Chapel on Wolf Road in Colonie. She was active with the St. Bernadine of Siena Fraternity, Secular Franciscan Order and the Padre Pio Prayer Group for 28 years. She volunteered her time and talents to the Little Sisters of the Poor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Murphy is survived by three children; Jack Murphy of Peekskill, NY, Barbara Dragon of Schenectady and Connie McNally and her husband, George of Delmar; fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren (and was eagerly awaiting the birth of her 14th in March of 2012). Her brother and sister-in-law, Oscar and JoAnn Murphy of New Castle, PA,sister-in-law, Donna Jolly of Denver, CO,and son-in-law John Harter of Scotia, also survive her.
Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Mary Eileen Harter in 2011; granddaughter, Christine Harter; daughter-in-law, Mary Alice Murphy; sister, Eileen Reinhard and brothers, Paul and Edward Murphy.
With her gentle ways and endless love, she has been a shining example for those whose lives she touched. Throughout her life, her faith sustained her and she will remain an inspiration to all who knew her.
