Mary Murphy

Mary Josephine Murphy, 84, of Claverack, New York and formerly of Bronxville, New York, died Tuesday, November 26, at Columbia Memorial Hospital Community Hospice following a valiant battle with cancer. Beloved wife of Matthew Hilt Murphy, she was born June 3, 1929, in Hagerstown, Maryland, the daughter of Samuel L. Greenawalt and Mary Burgner Greenawalt.

Mary attended Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, New York, before attending Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. On September 10, 1949 she married the love of her life, Matt, in Bronxville, New York, with whom she spent a blissful 64 years of marriage. Mary raised two children in Bronxville and was an active member of West Center Church and the church choir, as well as the King's Daughters. 25 years ago Mary and Matt retired and moved to Claverack, New York where Mary dedicated much of her time to the Hendrick Hudson chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving several terms as Regent. In her spare time she enjoyed genealogy, home computing, reading and spending time with her husband, family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Matthew Hilt Murphy of Claverack; two children, Mary Lois Smith Dezenzio, and Matthew Samuel Murphy; two grandchildren, Christopher Michael Smith and Brian Douglas Smith; and three great-grandchildren, Kendall Lily Smith, Colin Zachary Smith and Riley Maye Smith.
Mary was preceded in death by her father and mother, Samuel and Mary Greenawalt.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in the New Comer Cannon funeral home. New Comer Cannon is in charge of all funeral arrangements. Visitation will begin on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The family will be there to greet relatives and friends prior to the memorial service.
