NEW CITY, NY – Maryanne (Mendel) Slauson, 55, of New City, passed away on Sunday, September 19, 2010. After a fifteen year battle with breast cancer and a monumental determination to see her son married, Maryanne was able to confound her physicians, overcome the odds and live to see the wedding she so carefully planned with her new daughter-in-law and son. She died in peace the following morning. Maryanne's will and remarkable spirit remains as an everlasting gift to all.
Maryanne was full of energy and was determined to succeed in everything she pursued. Her love and caring for her family was strong and enduring. She was encouraging and a constant source of positive reinforcement to all she knew. Her generosity was legendary. Maryanne enjoyed golf, white water rafting, dancing, jet skiing, was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and New York Jets and loved to bask in the sun on the beach with a good book. She was employed with New York Telephone Company since 1973 and retired from Verizon in 2006 as Director of Operations. Maryanne served on countless boards and actively supported her community through the Rockland County Business Association and Junior Achievement programs. She earned her Master's Degree at Pace University in Business Management.
Maryanne was predeceased by her mother, Annette Keppler Mendel. She is survived by her life partner Steve Brower; her son Eric Slauson and wife Antonia; her father Herman V. Mendel (Patty Stratton) of Latham, and siblings; Mark Mendel (Janice) of San Jose, CA., Susie Barger of Westerlo, Eric Mendel of Costa Mesa, CA., Gary Mendel (Linda Moore) of Lake Tahoe, CA., Theresa Granville (Paul) of Pennsylvania, Greg Mendel (Annette) of Cobleskill, Maureen Ferrucci of Albany, John Matthew Mendel (Fannia) of Guilderland, and Diana (Dave) Quinn of Richmond, VA. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
A Celebration of Maryanne's life will be Saturday morning at 11:00 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 8 pm at the funeral home.
