Albany - Matthew "Babe" Daskalakis Sr., 86, passed away peacefully in his home Thursday, October 26, 2017 in the arms of Odette, his loving wife of 39 years.
A native of Brooklyn, Matthew turned his passion for baseball into his first career. After high school he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox Organization as a first baseman, and his talents took him up and down the east coast, where he played for a number of teams including the Albany Senators. During this time, he was drafted by the USMC, and he proudly served his country during the Korean War.
Following his baseball years, Matthew embraced a second career at NYS OMRDD. He retired after 25 years of helping youths succeed later in life. Matthew then embarked on his third and final career, purchasing the Boulevard Cafeteria (which later became the Ristorante Paradiso). Matthew was known for his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, and he left a lasting impression on everyone who was fortunate enough to have met him. His family will forever cherish their memories of him and his remarkable life.
Matthew is predeceased by parents George and Martha, and siblings Nicholas, Jack, Paul, and Mary.
He is survived by his beloved wife, children Matt Jr., Lisa, Adam, Alexander, and Nicholas, grandchildren Nicole, Matty, Lydia, Lyanna, and Vivian, his brothers George and James, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Matthew and his family's wishes there will be no calling hours.
The family would like to thank Dr. Alderisio and the staff of Albany Medical Center's Cardiology Department for their outstanding care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made in Matthew's memory to AMCH Cardiology Department.
