Michael Scott Cornell

June 10, 1956 — September 13, 2021

Michael S. Cornell, 65, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 13th, 2021, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Michael was born on June 10th, 1956, son to the late Charles Ray II and Lorraine Cornell of Albany. He was a lifelong resident of Colonie, graduated from Colonie Central High School, and received his Associates Degree from Hudson Valley Community College. Michael worked tirelessly throughout his career, rarely taking vacations or time off until retiring in 2019 as the Northeast Region Branch Manager of Parts Unlimited Inc. in Ballston Spa. He was known for his amazing sense of humor and ability to tell a great story, and never missed a sporting event, school function, or celebration for his son or grandsons. He continually spoiled everyone in his life with gifts and sparked laughter everywhere he went. He loved busting on, and at the same time bragging about how proud he was of his son, Jason. He enjoyed reading the New York Post and keeping his family up to date on all the latest news and TV schedules, going on a run to Sam's Club or to check out another car with his brother Ray, and dropping off donuts and treats to his grandsons.

Michael was diagnosed with cancer in October 2015 when a large tumor was discovered surrounding his kidney and he took it in stride, jumping right into surgery with a positive attitude. In 2016 it was found that the cancer had spread and he would need to start on the first of what would become various clinical trials and treatments. His beloved fiancé Sue Cappello was critical to his wellbeing throughout the entire fight, managing all his doctor's appointments and the continuous communications required. They would make the trek every few weeks for over 4 years to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City to undergo testing, treatments, and try to enjoy the sights as much as possible. He battled through prostate cancer and surgery as well, and continued fighting with optimism and humor until the very end. He exhibited the qualities from the great "Don't give up, don't ever give up" speech by Jimmy V that he admired so much.

Michael is survived by his fiancé, Sue Cappello; his son Jason and daughter-in-law Tracy Cornell; his grandsons Drew, Keegan, and Owen; his sister Karen (Michael) Mezz; his brother Ray Cornell, and several nieces and nephews.
