Michael R. Filkins

RENSSELAER - Michael R. Filkins (Head) 61, Rensselaer, NY passed away suddenly February 26, 2022 at St. Peter's Hospital with his family by his side.

Born April 8, 1960 in Albany, NY, he is the son of Jeanne Filkins-Aveyard and the late Michael Cerrone.

Mike was an Albany Icon to most. He was known and loved by many. He worked for the Albany City School District for 26 years as a Head Custodian before retiring last year. In those years he formed many friendships and made a lasting impression on many. He had a love of music and concert's; with Mike you would have the ultimate concert experience. He enjoyed his camp at Alps Family Campground where he made many fond memories with family and friends. He looked forward to attending the City of Albany St. Patrick's Day Parade, his monthly card games with friends and Alive at 5. To know Mike (Head) was to love him.

Mike is survived by the love of his life Kimberly Geurtze-Deere, his beloved daughter Cheryl Sullivan (Keith Garmley), his beloved Mother Jeanne Filkins-Aveyard, his step children Jacqueline Russell (Jason), Kayla Deere (Markie) and Andrew Deere (Brooklyn), his grandchildren Christopher Sullivan, Gabriele (Gabby) Garmley, Tyler Garmley, Summer Garmley, Jolie-Kyle Garmley, Athena Russell, Atlas Russell and Aubrey (Tink) Rider, his great-granddaughter Rylee Jane Garmley. He is survived by his Brothers Earl Filkins (Kathy), John Cerrone, Mark Cerrone, Thomas Cerrone, Paul Smith and Emerson Smith. His sisters Robin Weidman, Kimberly Filkins, Lori Filkins-Heffner and Christine Mastrobuono. He was predeceased by his sister Susan Cerrone-Waters. He is survived by his Aunt Marie Ryan and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 1 pm to 3pm with a celebration of life to immediately follow at 3pm on Sunday, March 6, 2022 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. In lieu of flowers donations in his name can be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis TN 38105-9959.
