Michelle M. Straker-Ferro, 49, A Bright Star, A Ray of Sunshine, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 23, 2021. Michelle was born in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. She is survived by her loving husband Kenneth, Daughters, Maya and Sydni and her mother Claudia.
After graduating from John Adams High School in Queens, NY, her aspiration to be a nurse was derailed when she became ill at 20 years old from Type 1 diabetes. That did not stop her from working various jobs as a health aide and medical assistant. She started nursing school in her late 30's with two kids, a husband, and an ambitious agenda to get her nursing license through many trials and tribulations. In 2014 Michelle was blessed with receiving a kidney, this improved her quality of life and enabled her to reach her goals of becoming a nurse, at graduation she was awarded the Florence Nightingale Award, which is one of the highest honors a graduate can receive.
Michelle was overjoyed when she was hired as a nurse at the Albany County Jail. She worked until her illness prevented her from continuing to care for her patients.
In addition to her mother, husband, daughters she leaves to mourn her Grandmother Ceylema, Aunts, Marva and Ellena, Arleen and Arlenia, Uncles, Andrew, Michael and Henley, Brother-in-law Richard, Sister-in-law Alison, cousins, Vincent Jr, Geneva, Shaina, Antonio, Nicole, Louis, Janela, Joel, James and Amanda and too many others to mention. She was preceded in death by Great Grandmother Alice, Aunt Pauline, Grandfather Lascelles, Uncle Glen, Cousin Destiny and Marcia and her stepfather Egbert and finally her favorite dog, Pumpkin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Foundation and the National Kidney Foundation.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 5, 2021 from 4pm-7pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet, NY 12189.
A funeral ceremony will be on Saturday, February 6 at 10am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Gathering size, within our chapels will be based on the most current NYS occupancy requirements. Masks are required, and social distancing is to be observed inside and outside of our chapels.
