World War II Veteran, Miller Floyd Jr. returned to his heavenly home on October 10, 2022. His devotion to his family, community, and firm belief in God supported him in his transition and gave him much peace.
Miller was born on March 22, 1922, in Micanopy, Florida. He was one of seven children born to the late Miller Sr. and Ada Floyd. Miller served his country as a member of the U.S Army in World War II in October of 1942. He soon after departed the United States on the Queen Elizabeth traveling to Europe to begin his deployment. He spent the next four years in various countries such as Wales, Scotland, and England providing fuel for the front-line soldiers. Following the war, Miller returned home to Micanopy, Florida and continued his education at Florida A&M University. While there, he was also accepted into a fraternal organization known as the Masonry.
Miller migrated to Schenectady, New York in 1950. There he met his late wife, Grace of 63 years. He was a prominent member of the community, working for the City of Schenectady while pursuing his passion of entrepreneurship. He and Grace opened M. G. F's delicatessen on Hamilton Street that sold groceries and hot food options.
After retiring from the city in 1984 after 27 years, Miller felt a call on his life to serve the Lord and became a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, where he was ordained as a deacon. Destined to continue his service in the community, he began working for the Carver Community Center in the maintenance department and the school system as a crossing guard at the corner of Hamilton Street and Hulett Street. With the passion for nurturing children, Miller and Grace Floyd spent the next several years providing childcare and fostering children in need. Following the loss of his wife, Grace, Miller made the ultimate decision to plant his roots in Virginia with his youngest daughter, Millicent for the remainder of his life.
Miller is preceded by his parents, Miller Sr. and Ada, his wife, Grace Floyd, his siblings, as well as his daughter, Beverly Floyd and son, Gary Evans. He is survived by his children, Milton Floyd, Joe Gordon Sr., Tamara Mont, Barbara Parker, Kim Floyd, Millicent Stevens, Loris Grace Floyd and many grand and great grandchildren.
We know that God is pleased to have one of His kind and faithful angels back in his arms, where he belongs. He will be sorely missed by those on earth.
A visitation will be held on Saturday October 22nd from 11am to 12pm, with a service to follow at 12pm, at Mt. Olivet Missionary Baptist Church, 1068 Park Ave, Schenectady, NY.
