Ghent- Morton W. Schermerhorn, 83, of Ghent died on Thursday, October 27, 2005 at Albany Medical Center surrounded by his beloved family. Born December 24, 1921 in Dover Plains, NY he was the son of the late Frederick Schermerhorn and Minnie (Wheeler) Whisple. Morton was a WWII veteran serving in Guata Canal in the United States Marine Corps from 1942-1945 receiving a presidential citation. He was a Past Color Guard Commander and lifetime member of the Ghent VFW Post #5933. Morton was also Past Commander of the Post and had two sons who also served as Commanders. Morton was a life member of the Chatham American Legion Post #42, and a member of the Ghent Sportsman's Club. As a member of the Albany Mason's Union #6, he was well known for his masonry skills. When he was a member of the Ghent Fire Company he laid the brickwork on the original building as well as the Ghent VFW and many other buildings in the Community. Morton helped build the Capital Imaging Center in Latham, which received a certificate for being the second most beautiful building in the Capital Region. Besides his love for painting signs, portraits and murals, Morton's hobbies included sculpturing, gardening and model airplanes.
Morton is predeceased by his brothers, George Schermerhorn and Kenneth Whisple, and his sisters Betty Bartel, Minnie Williams, and twins Madeline and Ethel.
Morton is survived by his wife of 61 years Gladys Marie Matthews, who he met in North Carolina when he was stationed at Camp LeJeune. He has three sons, George (Marilyn), Ken (Deanna) and Morton (Buddy) Schermerhorn, five daughters, Joan (William) Becker, Gloria Jean (William) Satter, Marcia (Nicholas Kulyniak) Schermerhorn, Rita (William, Jr.) Aikin, and Peggy (Mark) Myers. He also leaves behind to cherish his memory 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 5th at 2:00PM at the Ghent VFW Post#5933, Rt. 66, Ghent, NY. The family has requested that no flowers be sent.
