Nathaniel "Nate" Kirkland was born on August 26, 1931 in Aiken, SC to the late Willie and Lizzie Kirkland; he was one of 11 children. Nathaniel entered eternal rest on August 17, 2020 at Shaker Place Rehabilitation in Albany, NY.
Nathaniel migrated from South Carolina to New York State where he met and married his late wife Edna Kirkland (nee Lewis) in 1963; they remained married until her death in 2014. Their blended family moved to 302 Duane Avenue in Schenectady, NY. Nathaniel continued to live in the family home until he moved into a nursing care facility due to his health.
Nathaniel joined Refreshing Spring Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Georgetta Dix. He became a deacon in the church, serving faithfully in that capacity for many years. Deacon Kirkland, as he was known at the church, was personable and willing to do any job around the church. After church you were sure to find him and Sister Kirkland at the buffet.
Nathaniel was employed at Altamont Orchards for over 50 years, where he was than a worker, Nate was part of the family. He was known for his hard work, dedication to his job and strong work ethic.
Nathaniel also worked hard in his community. Whenever the neighborhood association was doing any project where his help was needed, especially cleanups, he would show up with this truck and out work people who were half his age.
Nathaniel Kirkland was preceded in death by his beloved wife Edna, his parents, Willie and Lizzie, a son Jason, his sisters Elease, Eunice, Mattie, Gladys, Liza and brothers James, Percy, Willie, and Ivory.
Nathaniel leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Valerie May (Carlton), son Nathan "Man" Thomas (Renee) and one sister, Marie Harris. His stepchildren Bruce, Lorenzo, Theda, David, Jerome, Linda, Leon (Shirley), Silas (Tabitha) and Alesia. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren, a host of relatives and friends, a faithful friend in Christ, Marion Porterfield, and his church family.
Funeral service will be held Monday, August 24 at 11 am. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road. A calling hour will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Park, Central Avenue, Colonie.
Gathering size, within our chapels will be based on the most current NYS occupancy requirements. Masks are required, and social distancing is to be observed inside and outside of our chapels.
