COLONIE – Nelson A. Corey, Jr., 90, of Colonie, passed away on Monday, July 8, 2013 surrounded by his family. Born in Poughkeepsie and raised in Troy, he was the son of Nelson A. and Lena (Roughton) Corey, Sr.
Nelson was educated in Troy. He joined the Army and served his country in WWII. Following his discharge, he continued his service in the National Guard. He was employed for many years as a tractor trailer driver, and later as a Fire Code Enforcement Officer for NY State.
Nelson was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Albany, where he was proud to serve as head usher. He was a volunteer firefighter for 50 years, 30 of those years as Chief of the Fire Prevention Bureau. Nelson was also a member of the VFW Post 8692, serving as commander from 1994-1997. He was a member of the Colonie Elks for 32 years.
Nelson is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Jo-Anne (Coons) Corey of Colonie; father to Donna (the late Douglas) Drew, Robin (Daniel) DiGiacomo and Lisa (Paul) Orsini; grandfather to Tamara, Taryn, Chelsie, Caitlin, Dayna, Connor and Brittany; great grandfather to Hunter, Isabelle, Avery, Gianna and Peyton Nelson; brother to John Corey and dear friend and trucker Al Sagendorf. He was predeceased by sisters Mildred, Dorothy and Evelyn.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of The Eddy Village Green, House 14, for their kindness and care.
Friends and family are invited to call from 4:00 to 7:00 pm of Friday at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. A private funeral service will be held at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Hospital or Make a Wish Foundation.
