ALBANY – Nickoletta "Nicki" Karathanasis, 83, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on February 11, 2015 at Daughters of Sarah Senior Community Center.
The daughter of Eleftheria and Stellios Rota, Nicki was born in Serifos, Greece on October 10, 1931. After marrying her husband Pythagoras "Peter" Karathanasis, they moved to Albany in 1970 in pursuit of a better life. Devoted to her religion and faith, Nicki was a member of St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church. She loved to cook and was known for her traditional Greek meals. A retired seamstress, Nicki had a passion for needlepoint and was also an avid gardener. Most of all, she adored her family and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Nicki is survived by her devoted husband, Peter; her sister, Demetra Karambela; her son George Karathanasis; her daughter Ritsa "Lisa" Karathanasis; her grandchildren, Nickoletta Patane, Helena Patane, Peter Karathanasis and Kristin Woods; Godson Vangelli "Evan" Paralis; many nieces and nephews; and dear friend Sue Curtin, who Nicki often referred to as "koukla." She is predeceased by her brother Yanni Rota.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 am at St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, 440 Whitehall Road, Albany. Calling hours will be on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, with a Trisagion service being held at 6:30pm at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. Interment will be in Memory Gardens, Colonie.
