YARMOUTH PORT, MA - Nora Poland Winstead, age 68, of Yarmouth Port, MA, formerly of Alexandria , VA , died on April 11, 2011 at her home. Nora was born on August 29, 1942 in Troy, NY, a daughter of Eddie J. and Peggy Newman Poland. Nora was raised in Troy, having graduated from Sacred Heart School in 1956, Catholic Central High School in 1960 and Caldwell College for Women, Caldwell NJ, in 1964 with a degree in mathematics.
Nora was predeceased by her husband Tony Winstead, Alexandria, VA in 1984 and her brother Timothy E. Poland, Troy, NY, in 1964.
Nora began her professional career with General Electric at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL), Niskayuna, NY, as a critical path methodology (CPM) scheduler. She continued as a CPM scheduler in the construction division of Polaroid Corporation, Cambridge, MA. While at Polaroid, Nora became a software developer. She continued as a soft ware developer for the rest of her professional life. Nora worked for Coopers and Lybrand, Washington DC, and served in many capacities in software development for Planning Research Corporation (PRC), McLean, VA, on domestic and international projects and proposals. Nora retired from PRC in 2001.
Nora was a tax preparer for H&R Block in Alexandria, VA, and Dennisport, MA. In 2005 Nora began work at the South Yarmouth, MA library, as a part-time circulation librarian. She retired earlier this year for health reasons.
Nora enjoyed family, reading, playing bridge, traveling, being the family bookie for the Saratoga doubles pool, going to the beach, and sitting at her favorite spot at Smugglers Beach South Yarmouth, MA, watching the boaters.
Nora is survived by her devoted sister, Kate Poland Downes and her husband David of Hanover, MA., her treasured nieces Maggie Newman Downes, Rockland, MA and Brigid Shaughnessy Downes, Hanover, MA.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday at Newcomer-Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie, NY from 4-7 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 310 Spring Avenue, Troy,NY on Saturday, April 16th at 9:30 am. Interment to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
