ALBANY – Norman Sontz, 79, passed peacefully on Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at St. Peter's Hospital. Born in Albany, NY on December 22, 1936, Norman was the youngest son of Joseph and Lillian (Kains) Sontz. He was married to the love of his life, Joan K. (Candlen) until her death in 2011. Norman is survived by his son, Joey (Rosie) Sontz of Albany, his step-children, Bertram (late Jill) Lehrer of Sebastopol, CA, Lizette (Alan) Strait of Poestenkill, and Rev. Christian Lehrer of Bay Point, CA. He grew up on Sparkill Avenue along with his brothers Ronald (Mary) Sontz and the late Melvin (late Anne) Sontz.
Norman was a US Veteran serving honorably during the Korean Conflict. A natural salesman, he worked in sales and sold real estate before beginning to work for the Delaware & Hudson Railroad first as a brakeman, then as a fireman for many years before becoming an Amtrak Engineer. His career spanned many decades ending on February 3, 1995, when he prevented a catastrophic train wreck on a run to NYC. He also published and produced, "Sparetime News", the first bowling newspaper of the Capital Region in the 1970's.
An avid sportsman, Norman enjoyed golf and pool, but truly excelled at bowling. In the 1960's and 70's he appeared many times on The King of the Hill Show Bowling Show as well as T.V. Tournament Time. At one point, he was on both shows at once and became a bit of a local celebrity. Norman had much success in his professional career as a bowler achieving legendary status with many 300 games and 800 Series. The highlight of his career was his 1104 Series which was one of the most exciting nights of bowling and a personal best for him. As a member of the PBA, Norman toured successfully on the Senior Bowling Circuit and traveled around the country with his wife. A member of the APA, he was an amazing pool player as well winning many Top Gun Tournaments and inspiring others at the same time to excel.
He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends. Missing him as well will be his cats, especially Sadie. Norman will be cherished and forever missed. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.
Services will be held on Wednesday, December 28th, at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie at 11 am with a calling hour preceding from 10 to 11 am. Interment will be held at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.
