Paul Sahagian, Jr.
ALBANY-Paul Sahagian, Jr. of Albany died peacefully on January 12, 2013 in Community Hospice at St. Peter's hospital after a long illness. Born in Troy, NY on July 9, 1930 he was the son of the late Paul Sahagian, Sr. and Katherine Tufankjian Sahagian.
Paul attended Albany Academy and was an honorary member of the class of 1948. He graduated from Bartram High School in Philadelphia. He attended the Albany College of Pharmacy and earned his pharmacy degree from Northeastern University in 1955.
Returning to Albany after graduation he went into business with his father as manager/owner of Medical Center Pharmacies with locations in Colonie and Albany from 1960 until fire destroyed the last store on Madison Ave in 1986. After his business closed he was employed as a pharmacist in his cousin's store, Esquire Pharmacy in Menands and Melrose until 1996.
Paul was active in amateur sports and served as AAU Junior Olympic chairman for track and field in the 1960's. He co-directed the indoor capital track club championship meets at the Washington Ave. Armory in the 1960's.
Paul is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Iva Joyce Brod. He is survived by his three sons Gregory P., Michael S. and David R. (Regina) Sahagian, his daughter Karen J. Roche (Sean P. Roche MD). He was the much loved "Poppy" to Eric Sahagian and Kelsey, Brendan, and Colin Roche. He is also survived by his brother Nordin Sahagian of Colonie, his uncle Edward (Arlene) Tufankjian, DO of Sicklerville, NJ and cousin Ellen (Joseph) Azadian of Florida. He was predeceased by his sister June Reno.
Paul survived lymphoma in 1958 and the complications of major surgery in 1996. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and was thrilled to see them win two World Series. In his later years he enjoyed attending and hearing about the athletic games and meets of his four grandchildren. He will always be their biggest fan.
A memorial service to honor Paul will take place on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the First Congregational Church, 405 Quail Street, Albany at 11:00 AM. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception after the service in Palmer Hall at the church.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Paul's memory to be made to First Congregational Church or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
