STILLWATER – Peter Cornelius Veldman, 88, passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at Wesley Healthcare Center in Saratoga Springs with his family at his side. Born in IJmuiden, Noord Holland, Netherlands, he was the son of the later Hendrik Ernst and Pietje (Dekker) Veldman.
Peter and his family moved to the United States on October 14, 1933. He graduated from Castleton High School in 1943 and shortly thereafter enlisted in the United States Navy. Peter served as an Electricians Mate 2nd Class on the command ship U.S.S. Mt. McKinley in the Pacific theater, received several medals and commendations, and was honorably discharged on May 3, 1946. He earned several certifications through the Naval Training School at Iowa State College, Milwaukee Vocational School and SUNY Adult Education. Peter worked as a Journeyman Electrician for IBEW Local 724 for 40+ years and was an instructor for the Tri-City Joint Apprenticeship program. He married the late Maureen Alice (Finn) Veldman in 1957 and they resided in Albany for most of their adult lives. Peter was also a past parishioner of St. Theresa of Avila.
Along with his parents and wife Maureen, Peter was predeceased by his brothers Hendrik (Scotia, NY), Theodorus (Red Hook, NY) and Garrett (Colonie, NY).
He is survived by his son Richard and daughter-in-law Andrea, his grandson Ryan and granddaughters Kylie and Kendra, and several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 am at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.
