ALBANY, NY – Former resident of Woodbury, CT, Phyllis Clark Nininger, passed away at home on Tuesday, March 27, at 79 years of age from complications due to a brain tumor diagnosed in November.
Born September 11, 1927 in Boston, MA, Phyllis graduated from Concord Academy (Concord, MA) and Connecticut College (New London, CT). She lived in Lowell, MA until her marriage in 1951 to Charles Mackubin Nininger (1920-1985) when the couple moved to Oxford, CT to start a family. While living in Oxford they were members of the Southbury Federated Church.
In 1960, the family settled in Woodbury, CT and joined the First Congregational Church. In addition to raising five children, Phyllis was an active community member. She was a Girl Scout Leader, volunteer for F.I.S.H., member of the Junior League of Waterbury and the Connecticut Choral Society, Director and Secretary of Woodbury Hill Condominium Association, and Clerk for Woodbury Planning Commission. Phyllis was also a faithful and active member of her church, participating over the years as a member of the church voice and hand bell choirs, music committee, Board of Deacons, church clerk and served as church secretary from 1978 until her retirement in 1993.
Phyllis enthusiastically embraced life. She especially enjoyed activities with family and friends; singing, sailing, camping, hiking, tennis, creative writing, card games, conversation and laughter. She was a wonderful wife & mother, a devoted grandmother and a great friend to many. She will be missed dearly.
Phyllis is survived by her five children; Susan Nininger of Los Angeles, CA, Charles Rockinger of Lafayette, CO, John Nininger of West Newbury, VT, Clark Doninger of Harwinton, CT, and Kate Dockins of Albany, NY. She is also survived by daughter-in-laws; Maureen Smith-Nininger and Sara Rockinger, son-in-law; Robert Dockins, eight grandchildren; Aaron Nininger, Samuel Rockinger, Ida and Nancy Nininger, Everett, Avery and Griffin Doninger, and Nicholas Dockins, and two sister-in-laws; Nancy Parker Clark of Chelmsford, MA and Deborah Parker Clark of Concord, MA.
Daughter of the late Lincoln Clark Sr. and Ethel Hockmeyer Clark of Lowell, MA and sister to the late Lincoln Clark Jr. of Chelmsford, MA, Victor Fuller Clark of Concord, MA and Constance Clark, she now joins her family in Heaven.
A memorial service will take place at 11:00am Saturday, April 7, at First Congregational Church of Woodbury, CT. Memorial contributions may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 185 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield, CT 06109.
