Radford Auswin Menns, 83, beloved husband of Joyce E. Lewis-Menns, peacefully passed away on Saturday, July 29, 2023, surrounded by the love and care of his family at their home in Albany, NY. He was born on September 28, 1939, in Jointwood, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, to Daniel and Maude Menns.
Radford Auswin Menns led a remarkable life filled with dedication and passion. He attended Retirement Primary School and furthered his education at Kingston Technical High School, where he honed his skills in Technical Drawing and Architecture. These talents laid the foundation for a successful career in the construction industry, where he flourished in Senior Management roles for the Jamaican government at the Ministry of Construction and Housing. His love for architecture took him all over the island, overseeing and managing various projects with unwavering commitment.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Radford cherished his time at home. He found joy in tending to odd jobs, gardening, and fixing things around the house. An avid reader, he immersed himself in knowledge, and his soul found solace in hymns and nature documentaries. He cherished moments with loved ones, calling friends and family, and sharing laughter with his buddies from church.
His faith was at the core of his being. Though born into a Presbyterian home, Radford's encounter with the teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church deeply resonated with him. Determined to seek truth, he immersed himself in studying the Scriptures and, at 16 years old, took the profound step of being baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church. From that moment on, he remained a devoted member, serving in various roles within the congregation. He served as Deacon, Building Committee Chair, Elder, Pathfinder Director, Treasurer, Lay Evangelist, Sabbath School Teacher, Stewardship Director, and Missionary Volunteer (Adventist Youth Society) Leader, dedicating himself to the spiritual growth of his community.
Radford's life exemplified love, faith, and service, leaving an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will be forever cherished, and he will be dearly missed.
Radford was undeniably a devoted family man, a pillar of love and support to many. Fondly known by a multitude of endearing names - Papa, Popps, Uncle Aus, Alvin, Uncle Radford, Brother Menns, Menns, Elder Menns, and Daddy Menns - he touched the lives of all who crossed his path. His warm, witty, and caring nature drew people to him, especially those seeking the guidance and reassurance of a father's love.
In 1974, Radford found his soulmate in Joyce E. Lewis, and their union was blessed with two wonderful daughters, Marsherene and Shauna.
He leaves behind a loving wife, devoted daughters, and son-in-law, Robert Reid. Radford's pride and joy were his grandchildren, Samuel and Sariah, who reside in Port St. Lucie, Florida. He also held a special place in his heart for his beloved adopted granddaughter, April Perry, of Albany, New York.
He is also survived by his brother, Lorenzo "Basil" Menns of Chesapeake, Virginia, and his sisters, Shirley Johnson of Lithonia, Georgia, and Linda Menns of Chudley, Manchester. Additionally, a host of nieces and nephews cherish his memory.
While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the lasting impact Radford had on our lives. His unshakable faith in God and unwavering trust in people allowed him to see the best in others and encourage them on their journeys. Despite any misunderstandings, he embraced a perspective of love and kindness, leaving behind a legacy of compassion that will forever endure.
