Raymond J. Hughes Jr, 90, of Colonie, passed away on December 17, 2021 at home after battling Alzheimer's.
He was born in Albany on November 18, 1931 to the late Raymond and Anna May (Heim) Hughes.
Ray served in the Navy from 1948-1951 as a Corpsman and graduated from Albany Business College after his discharge. Through the years he was employed at Normanskill Dairy, Dorn's Transportation and finally the State of New York where he specialized in Corporation Tax until his retirement in 1990. He was a volunteer firefighter with Colonie Village Fire Company for 63 years, serving as President, Director and Fire Police Captain. He also volunteered with Colonie EMS for 22 years as an Emergency Vehicle Operator. He enjoyed vacationing throughout the country and spending time with his large extended family.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Elizabeth Brown (Robert), Anna Mae McDonald (Edmund), Kathryn Thomas (Arthur), brother James Hughes and son-in-law Duncan Newberry.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 66 years, Diane A. Hughes, children Bonnie Newberry, Raymond Hughes III (Sheila), John Hughes (Robin Murphy), grandchildren Jessica Hodson (Joseph), Scott Hughes (Maria), Jill Menzies, Duncan Newberry (Saamra), Matt Newberry, Danielle Hughes (Armando), Chris Hughes (Danielle), Jeff Hughes, Alicia Hughes (Devin), Sara Taylor (Noel) and great-grandchildren Gianna, Jameson, Kadyn, Neala, Chase, Meeya, Ryker, Jade, Jocelyn, Jisele, Amir, Kian, Mikah, Ethan, Sienna, Nova, Anaya, Nathan, Payton, Romi, Arianna, Vinenzo, Skye, sister-in-law Avis Phillippe and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank the staff of Landmark Health and Community Hospice of Albany for their wonderful care and compassion for Raymond and Diane.
Visitation will be held Wednesday December 29th from 4pm-7pm with a service to follow at 7pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, Colonie, New York.
Interment to take place Thursday December 30th at 11am at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
