The Rev. Oscar Frederick Sodergren passed away peacefully on September 16, 2016 at Kingsway Manor in Schenectady.
Oscar was born October 10, 1922 to the late Oscar and Hazel (Stinson) Sodergren. Following high school graduation in 1940, he worked for General Electric in Pittsfield. After serving in the Army Signal Corps during World War II, he returned to Pittsfield and married Doris Best on August 12, 1944.
While continuing work at General Electric he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute earning an engineering degree. Subsequently he earned a Masters in Business from Union College. After retiring from General Electric, Oscar was ordained as a priest in the Albany Diocese of the Episcopal Church.
He was united in marriage for 70 years with Doris E. Sodergren. Before her death in 2014, they enjoyed traveling and loved being with family and friends. Earlier they were active members of Eastern Star. Oscar was a member of the Masonic Temple in Pittsfield as well.
Oscar enjoyed his "ham radio" maintaining his amateur license W1QNI/W2EOU throughout his life.
Oscar is survived by his children, Erica J. S. Weinstock, Enid K. S. Oberholtzer, Vern O. Sodergren, and Olin F. Sodergren; his grandchildren, Beth Weinstock, Jason Oberholtzer, Danielle and Brandon Sodergren, and Erikson and Lukas Sodergren; his step-grandchildren, Rachel and Emily; and his step-great-grandchildren, Samuel and Benjamin. He is also survived by a brother John Sodergren of Brockton, MA and two sisters, Marjorie Moller of Avon, MA and Janet Sodergren Senecal of Rutland, VT; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Charlotte Ferraro and brother Arvid Sodergren.
A memorial service will be held at Calvary Church in Burnt Hills, NY on Saturday October 15, 2016 at 11a.m. Inurnment will be immediately following the service.
