Richard G. Helmin

Richard G. Helmin (88) of Rotterdam, NY, passed away on July 29, 2016 surrounded by his loving wife and family.
Born May 3, 1928 to Julia Pawlowski and William B. Helmin (both deceased), he attended Amsterdam, NY Public Schools. After graduating from Wilbur H. Lynch High School in 1946, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving until 1949. He attended George Washington University in Washington, DC, graduating in 1953 with a Bachelor's in Political Science.
Working in various positions of drafting and design with local design shops and architects, Richard joined the New York Telephone Company (later Verizon) in 1962. He retired from Verizon as a Design Engineer in 1988.
Married to Janice Fasolino on October 22, 1960, he is survived by his wife and three sons, Stephen (Stella Gittle) of Fultonville, NY; David (Michelle), grandson Andrew Jacob and granddaughter Elisabeth Grace of Manchester, CT; and Jon Christopher (Jody), grandson Jonathan Richard and granddaughter Julia Grace of Kenmore, NY. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Major (Gene) of Hagaman, NY and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Doris Kuczek and her husband, Mac.
Richard was active in supporting his children's interests, St. Gabriel's parish and Mohonasen schools. In support of the Mohonasen Marching Band, he was an active member of the lighting committee that brought lights to the school's athletic fields. He also applied his design and artistic talents to constructing various structures for school fairs, presentations and other events. For many years, he was a Lector at Sunday mass.
A true Renaissance man, he was fluent in several languages and had many varied interests. He spent many joyful hours designing landscapes, tending his gardens, preparing and sharing gourmet desserts, and entertaining friends and family for any occasion.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 1, 2016 from 4:00pm-7:00pm at St. Gabriel's Roman Catholic Church. A mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at 10:00am at the Church. Interment will follow mass at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery with full military honors.
