Richard M. Goldman (Dick) passed away peacefully at home on October 2, 2023, at the age of 89, surrounded by loving friends and caregivers.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ben and Betty Goldman, as well as siblings Leroy Gould, Natalie Goldman and Donna Goldman Sewitch, and niece, Melissa Sere. He is survived by his nephews and their wives, Scott (Nancy) and Nick (Cathy) Sewitch. Richard is also survived by his longest and closest friend, Fred Silva, and his children, Katherine, David, Steven, and Elizabeth. He had warm and loving relationships with cousin, Martha Rothman, and friends Randy and Jane Craig, Sandy Ray, Helen Elam, and Bob Bailey.
Richard graduated from Perth Amboy N.J. High School, and earned his Ph.D. in English from Indiana University. He taught for many years in the English department at The State University of New York at Albany. Richard was a lover of the arts and traveled extensively. He was often in New York City for musical theater, dance, and opera. His home was filled with his extensive collection of CDs and DVDs covering multiple genres from jazz to pop to opera and musical theater. Of course, having spent his career in English literature, he read extensively, and enjoyed many types of writing from Shakespeare to popular crime novels, and much in between. Melissa's daughter, Tatiana, said he was usually the most well-read person in the room, and his sister, Donna, grumbled when he finished the Sunday New York Times crossword in short order. Richard's love of opera and theater was not confined to New York. He travelled the world and, being multi-lingual, he enjoyed performances in many countries. He was an engaging raconteur, and delighted friends and family with tales from his travels, including a course-by-course description of each of the wonderful meals that he savored. Perhaps the best take on Richard's life was provided by Richard himself…"It has been a grand one."
At Richard's request, there will be no funeral or memorial service.
