Colonie – Greenway, Richard E., 76, died peacefully on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at home surrounded by his loving family, after a 3-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Richard was born on December 1, 1947 to the late Bertha M. Greenway (McClellan).
Richard was born in Cambridge, NY and at the age of 2 moved to Castleton where he resided until 1985 when he married the love of his life and moved to Colonie.
At the age of 14 he started working at Cordial Greens Country Club. After graduating from Maple Hill High School in 1966 he worked at the Fort Orange Paper Company until he started at the New York Telephone Company in 1967. Throughout his career he worked at AT&T, Lucent, Avaya then back to Verizon where he retired in June 2002. He was a member of CWA Union, Local 1118. As a member he held various positions including Stewart, Chief Stewart and VP. One of the biggest joys of his career was having the privilege of working the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid.
Richard met his beloved wife, Lynne in 1982, and the two were wed on June 14, 1985. He was a dedicated family man. He was an avid fan of RPI Men's hockey and always made various types of cookies for their away games. He loved spending time hunting every winter at his camp in Grand Gorge. He enjoyed golfing, especially during their yearly stays in Myrtle Beach. Richard always attended his families' sporting events from his children to his grandchildren, and even his great grandchildren regardless of where they were, even as far as Florida. One of his greatest joys was being a member of the Castleton Fire Department where he was a Lifetime member, serving as president for a number of years and was Fireman of the Year in 1984.
Richard is survived by his wife, Lynne, and his loving children, Debbie (Brian) Cavanaugh, Richard T. Greenway, Laura Zell (Dan Snay), Vicki Palmatier (Joe Mann) and Benjamin Greenway; his extended children, Steve Palmatier, Rhonda Greenway and Maria Woods; his adored grandchildren Kyle, Robert, Meghan(Michael), Brandon(Alyssa), Nicholas, Benny(Rachel), Dez, Collin, Carissa, Dylan, Lily, Laura, Steven, and Mary; and his dear great-grandchildren Ryder, Lawson, Garrus, Paisley, Kavanaugh, Gideon, Madeline and Dawson; his sister, Judy Lilkas; his nieces, Amy and Heather; along with many close friends.
Calling hours 4-7pm will be held Monday April 22,2024 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, NY 12205. Funeral Service 9am April 23,2024 at funeral home. Interment to follow Woodlands Cemetery, Cambridge, NY.
