East Greenbush~
Richard R. Hertzel, 104, passed away at home after a short illness on Thursday, March 1, 2018.
Born in New York City, Richard was the son of the late William and Ella (Leffler) Hertzel, and the devoted husband of the late Irene (Spaulding) Hertzel.
Richard founded, owned and operated several health care facilities in the Capital District, including Whitehouse Home for Adults, Rosewood Gardens Health Related Facility and Candlewood Gardens Assisted Living Facility.
For many years, Richard also served as a Councilman for Rensselaer County and was a member of the East Greenbush Planning Board. He was a member of the Rotary Club and also a Mason. Richard was a Sunday School teacher at Community Congregational Church in East Greenbush and he delivered food to those in need through Meals on Wheels. In his pastime, Richard enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include his son Ronald Hertzel (Karen Tremblay), grandsons Bradley and Kevin Hertzel, three great grandchildren Holly, Heidi and Hans Hertzel, and his dear friend Georgia Calamaras. Also survived his sister Esther Barber, daughter-in-law, Eileen Hertzel as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents and wife, Richard was predeceased by his siblings Helen, William, Charlie, Joella and Pauline.
Prayers will be offered at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 8th at Memory Gardens, 983 Watervliet Shaker Road, Colonie.
