Colonie- Major Richard N. Hathaway, Jr., 86, U.S. Army retired, passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at the Stratton V.A. Medical Center in Albany. Richard was born in Fall River, MA in 1920 and lived most of his life in the Albany area.
Major Hathaway served in WWII as a member of the 5th Ranger Battalion, where he participated in the D-Day assault on Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc. He also was a Korean War veteran and served on active duty during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Army in 1969 and continued to serving in the Army Reserve as a full time technician until retirement in 1979. He received numerous military decorations including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters, and was a Knight of the French Legion of Honor. Major Hathaway was a past president of the Ranger Battalions Association of WWII and Past Commander of Chapter 10 of the DAV. He was also a member of the American Order of the Croiox de Guerre, U.S. Army Ranger Association and the Ranger Regiment Association, and a member of the Colonie Elks Lodge. An avid historian, poet, and author, Richard held memberships in numerous historic and Philanthropic organizations. Richard was a communicant of the First Lutheran Church in Albany where he and his wife Elizabeth were active members.
Richard was predeceased by his father, Richard N. Hathaway, Sr., his mother Sarah Whitworth Hathaway, his brother Lt. Robert I. Hathaway USAAF, son Robert P. Hathaway and grandson Michael P. Hathaway.
He is survived by his beloved wife Elizabeth A. Vadney Hathaway, three sons, Brian A. (Lynn) of Valrico, FL, Richard W. (Songkran) and Marc F. (Annette) both of Rotterdam, Five grandchildren, Susanne, Sara, Stephen, Marci and Christopher; Four step-grandchildren, Nicholas, Amanda and Melissa Hollenbeck and Tatiya Phaetthayanan; one great-granddaughter Emily Ruppert, and one daughter-in-law, Elaine McMullen Hathaway.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at First Lutheran Church, 646 State Street, Albany, NY. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 Am at the church. Interment will be in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. The family has requested that no flowers be sent.
