Albany- Robert F. Cichon, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, and fine gentleman, was born on Christmas Day, 1931 to Genevieve (Chmielowicz) and Frank Cichon; the first of 13 children. He passed away May 5, 2022. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years Gloria (Heitzman) Cichon, his son David, brothers: Leonard (Phyllis), Thomas (Diane), Edward (Helen), and Donald (late Helen), and sisters Geraldine (late Thomas) Stillman and Mary Jane (Joseph) Aidala. He is survived by his daughter Linda (Michael P.) Storonsky, sons Russell and Douglas (Paula) Cichon, grandchildren Michael C. Storonsky, M.D., Natasha C. (Stephen) Becker, Jesse Parent, and Taylor Anne Cichon, great-grandson Stephen Becker, Jr., sisters Joan (late Sebastian) Audi, Carol (late Arthur) Norris, Kathleen (John) Bastiani, and Sandra (Bernie) Kaese, brothers William (Noreen) and John, and many nieces and nephews.
Robert was born in Depew, NY and was raised in Albany. Following graduation from Albany High, he served with the Army in the Korean War where he earned his combat infantryman badge as a morse code operator. He worked for 45 years at General Electric/Lockheed Martin as a draftsman. In the 1970s he was one of the first trained in the then state of the art CAD (Computer Aided Drafting). He transferred to Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady where he assisted in the design of nuclear submarines for the US Navy, including the stealth sub, among other assignments. He was a quiet, capable, and determined man who designed his own home. An avid reader, he could fix anything he could find in a repair manual, including his children's cars.
He enjoyed square dancing with his wife with the Altamont Station Squares, playing cards, fishing, helping his sons design and build winning Pinewood Derby cars, serving as a Boy Scout leader, assisting with Gloria's antique collecting, and most of all spending time with his grandchildren.
Viewing and calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 from 9:00am-10:30am at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY 12205. A graveside service will follow at 11am at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, 303 Sand Creek Road, Albany, NY. Masks will be required for the services. Donations may be made to the ARC Foundation of Saratoga County Inc. or Warren, Washington & Albany Counties ARC.
