BALLSTON SPA, NY – Captain Robert E. Hayes, 82, passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at the VA Hospital in Albany. He was born in Schenectady and was the son of the late Ellis and Helen Hayes. Bob was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II. He worked for the City of Schenectady Fire Dept. for 32 years, retiring as Captain, 13 years as a Deputy with the Schenectady County Sheriff and for several years with Brinks Armored Car as a armed guard. Mr. Hayes was a life member of the Ballston Spa Elks Lodge #2619, a member of the Bridgeline Historical Society and a member for over 25 years of the National Grange. He also served as an honor guard at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Bob is the beloved father of Robert E. Hayes, Jr. of Schenectady and the cherished grandfather of Patrick R. Hayes of Cambridge and Rebecca C. Hayes of Lyons, NY. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Marion (Hayes) Preston, and his brother, Clark Hayes.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at New Comer- Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Interment will be private at the convenience of the family at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
